Acurlite's New Sun Control Division |
Acurlite’s new Sun Control Division, a division of Acurlite Structural Skylights, has developed a sunshade system enhancing its line of architectural products. By contributing to reduced energy consumption and a healthier indoor environment, Acurlite’s sunshade systems are designed to help you meet your high-performance building goals. A solar shading strategy utilizing sun control devices is one of the best ways to minimize solar heat, manage daylight, and reduce glare.
Acurlite uses its own engineering department to custom design any shade to meet an architect’s aesthetic and structural concerns. Contractors and architects appreciate the convenience of unitized construction for easy and quick installation. Extrusions go straight from AutoCAD to production on the new five-axis CNC machining center in a controlled environment for accuracy.

Acurlite Structural Skylights Celebrates 10 years of Business |
Acurlite Structural Skylights, Inc. (Acurlite) is proud to announce 10 successful years in business. Acurlite has continued to grow and invest in their employees and facility throughout these challenging economic times through strong relationships with valued customers and preferred vendors. We also have the best team in the industry that works hard to deliver projects on time and unitized for fast erection.
Ron Palombo started Acurlite in 2001 when TRACO/Skytech Systems, Inc. relocated its skylight division from Bloomsburg, PA to Tennessee. Ron Palombo, a former principal at Skytech Systems, Inc., his wife, Donna, and a talented group of individuals set out with a mission to provide the best heavy-duty, commercial skylights and sloped glazing products on the market.
Those products have received rigorous testing that meet and exceed requirements for the South Florida hurricane-rated skylights and government anti-terrorism blast-rated skylights.
Acurlite has over 250 years of combined experience in the glazing industry. Moving forward in 2011, Acurlite is excited to be adding new products such as a high-performance terrace door/folding glass wall system and a sun shade system with multiple shade applications.
These new product lines will be engineered and tested to the same stringent specifications that are synonymous with the Acurlite name and they will exceed industry requirements.
Thank you for a successful 10 years. We look forward to another 10 years of providing customers with the “Acurlite Advantage”.

Technically Advanced Skylight Offers both Sun and Shade |
Acurlite Structural Skylights has recently designed, engineered, manufactured and installed a skylight that offers both Sun and Shade. Acurlite teamed up with Sage Electrochromic Inc. in Faribault, MN; a manufacturer of electrochromic glass to offer their customer a technically advanced skylight. At the flip of a switch natural day light can automatically be tinted to shade the room. The skylight also incorporates photovoltaic panels into the system to offer an alternate source of energy to power the electrochromic glass.
The skylight at 100 West Putnam in Stamford, CT is a 30’0” (W) x 85’0” (L) Double Pitch Skylight. It is located over an office space where the demand for natural daylight is high; but it is also crucial for the people occupying the space to be able to control the glare and heat gain from natural daylight.
The heavy-duty, commercial skylight that Acurlite installed was the perfect fit for providing natural daylight within the space and Sage electrochromic glass gave the occupants of the space the ability to tint areas of the space to reduce glare and heat gain while using the space. To give the project a GREEN touch, photovoltaic panels were glazed into the system as well giving the electrochromic glass a alternate source for energy.

Skylight Replacement Does Not Slow Restaurant Business |
The Rusty Scupper, a well known restaurant in the Baltimore, MD (Inner-Harbor) area had a skylight that was failing due to age and was leaking on its customers. Acurlite Structural Skylights was contracted as a General Contractor by the Rusty Scupper’s Owner to replace the existing skylight with a new more appealing skylight while the business continued to stay open. The scope of work included the complete removal and replacement of the existing wood segmented barrel vaulted skylight with a new state of the art insulated lean-to aluminum heavy duty commercial skylight. The approximate size of the skylight was 17’0” wide x 65’0” long, obviously a large part of the Rusty Scuppers design and appeal.
The removal and replacement included Acurlite providing a new structural steel curb and building enhancements to accept the new lean-to skylight. While replacing the existing skylight, not only did Acurlite contend with the removal of the old failing skylight, but also the HVAC ductwork that remained in place and completely operational so as not to affect any of the Rusty Scupper’s customers. Acurlite was up to the challenge presented to them intent to work in a timely manner to not slow business at the popular Rusty Scupper Restaurant.
Acurlite worked to meet all of the customers needs and expectations to complete the project in a timely manner, keeping the Rusty Scupper open for business during the entire installation. To accomplish this, Acurlite performed much of the work during off morning hours. From start to finish including removal and replacement, the complete project took just two weeks for Acurlite, making the skylight replacement a success while keeping customers rolling through the doors at the Rusty Scupper Restaurant. Please see the pictures below of the Rusty Scupper renovation.

Acurlite tests and passes the first part of their H.C. Rate and ATFP Test. |
Acurlite Structural Skylights Inc. has been researching and developing Hurricane Rated (HR) and Anti-Terrorism Force Protection (ATFP) skylight systems to meet the new, stringent coastal building codes. With the assistance of a Ben Franklin Technology Partners invest award, Acurlite is scheduled for the testing to take place at the National Certified Testing Laboratories
in York, Pa.
On May 18, 2006 Acurlite tested its first test unit. This test unit passed the test and now 2 more units must be tested for the test to be final. The factory-assembled unit were subjected to wind, impact and cyclic pressure tests that professionally prove the integrity of the systems beyond the new requirements for coastal glazing applications. Test results will be added to the website when they become available.
